As a parent of a small child, I feel like I’m pretty clued up when it comes to toys. 80% of my floorspace is covered in them at any one time. I know what will be a big hit and what will sit gathering dust. I like to think I’m quite the expert.
Except when it comes to buying toys for other people’s kids.
Shopping for children other than my 3-year-old daughter leaves me feeling a bit flummoxed. So I was very grateful when I was provided with a voucher code to spend on the Wicked Uncle website.
Wicked Uncle isn’t your usual online toy shopping experience. They stock really interesting and quirky presents for children (salt water powered spider-bot, anyone?) It makes a welcome change from the so-called “must haves” dominating other toy retailers.
Not only is the Wicked Uncle website an absolute doddle to navigate, it is extremely helpful when it comes to choosing that perfect present.
You can search for products over 10 categories, so if you know certain personality traits of your intended recipient, this method of shopping puts you onto a winner straight away.
There is also the option to search by gender and age. We all know nothing is off-limits to boys or girls but if all you know about your child’s classmate is the fact they are an 8-year-old boy, searching this way is a pretty safe bet.
You can also select “All” and browse through the whole range of products, everyone from tiny tots to big kids is catered for. (This is how I ended up spending some of my own money on top of the voucher- so many fab present ideas!)
I browsed the site with my nieces and nephew in mind. Like a lot of kids these days, they don’t play out in the streets like we did. Their free time consists of organised activities and they have a home full of lovely things to keep them entertained. This is why I struggle to buy for them, it’s not as simple as choosing something from the best selling mainstream gifts because chances are they will already have it.
Thinking of my tween nieces I selected the Fashion and Style category and quickly came across the Invent-a-scent Perfume Lab and a Lip Balm Lab. I knew these would be right up their street- creative and experimental with a pampering aspect thrown in.
Whilst browsing “All” I discovered the gravity defying remote control car. Within moments I had gone from not knowing such a thing existed to being certain this was the ideal present for my nephew.
On adding each item to my basket I got a pop up message reaffirming my excellent choices, a bit like a virtual high five! This brought a smile to my face, there’s a really friendly vibe to this website.
As well as a fantastic range of products, Wicked Uncle offer services to make the whole present buying experience even easier. You can have your purchases gift wrapped in a variety of cool wrapping paper.
Gift wrap costs £2.95 for the first present then £1.50 for each additional present. For £1.95 you can add a greetings card which will be “handwritten by elves” for your convenience and you can also choose a free gift tag for your parcel. As you can see, my husband is a genuine Wicked Uncle.
Standard delivery takes 2-3 working days and costs £2.95. I placed my order at 10.30pm on Thursday night and it was delivered the following Tuesday, packed up nice and securely. There are also the options for express delivery and collection in person.
There was a ready made thank you postcard in the parcel, so if you are having the items sent directly to the recipient there is no excuse for them not to show their gratitude!
If you need ideas that are “out of the box” when it comes to children’s presents, Wicked Uncle will have you spoilt for choice. You’ll go from racking your brain for ideas to struggling to narrow your options down! The extra services they provide are so handy too. I’ll definitely be purchasing from Wicked Uncle in future.
I was provided with a £40 voucher to spend with Wicked Uncle in exchange for an honest review of the service. All words and opinions are my own.
